RED BANK, NJ - The following is a listing of events at Red Bank Public Library for the month of January 2013:
Children are invited to enjoy the programs in the Avice Noblett Children’s Room of the Red Bank Public Library in January.
Children 5 and older are invited to a Wii Sports Party from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Monday, January 14, 2013. Laugh, play, have fun, and enjoy board games, crafts, and some snacks too.
Artsy Smartsy will take place on Saturday, January 19, 2013, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Children 5 and older will learn about the contemporary artist, painter, and quilter Faith Ringgold and create their own masterpieces in her style.
Join the Rockin’ Readers Tween Book Club on Wednesday, January 30, 2013, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. for children ages 9 to 12. Call the library to find out the title of the book we will talk about in January.
Yoga Kids for children 5 and older takes place Thursdays from 4:30 to 5:00 p.m. Alice Balzarini, who specializes in yoga for children, conducts this class. Children should bring their own yoga mats.
Timber, a certified therapy dog, visits the library twice a month to listen to hesitant or reluctant readers and dog lovers too as they read to him. Children age 5 and over can register for a free 15 minute Timber Time session on the first and third Wednesday of each month between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m.

The Children’s Room also offers free drop-in Storytimes for young children with a caregiver on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday mornings at 10:30 a.m. and Monday afternoon at 3:00 p.m. Join us for some quick stories, musical activities, and a craft. Storytimes are on break through January 5, 2013, and resume January 7, 2013. Registration is not required for storytimes.
The Young Adult Anime Club for pre-teens and teens in grades 6 through 12 meets at the Red Bank Public Library on the first Saturday of every month from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Join other people who share your love for anime and watch a few episodes of a show together. The Young Adult Book Club for teens 13 and over meets at the Red Bank Public Library on the first Monday of each month from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. In January we will read The Reformed Vampire Support Group by Catherine Jinks, which can be checked out at the Adult Circulation Desk. Adult programming in January starts with the next meeting of the Artists’ Workshop at the Red Bank Public Library on Thursday, January 3, 2013, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Artists seeking inspiration, motivation, and time to devote to their work are invited to attend the “Artists’ Workshop” on the first Thursday of each month. Red Bank artist Joe Bergholm is our Artist-in-Residence and works with the artists as a group and individually, offering suggestions for subjects as well as guidance in principles of art such as color, composition, and the selection and use of materials. The “Artists’ Workshop” is free and no registration is required. Participants should bring their own drawing and painting materials, although oils are not permitted because of ventilation concerns.
Colleen Smith, MA, MSW, LSW, of the Monmouth County Office on Aging, leads two Caregiver Support Groups at the Red Bank Public Library. Meeting dates in January will be Wednesday, January 9, 2013, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. and Tuesday, January 15, 2013, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. These free programs are available to anyone who is a caregiver for a person over the age of 60. Caregivers are invited to come and relax while finding resources and information with a supportive group of peers. Free one-on-one Resume Help will be offered at the Red Bank Public Library on selected Saturdays between 12:00 and 4:00 p.m. beginning January 12, 2013. Our librarian volunteer will provide assistance writing a new resume or updating an old one and will explain the online career resources available through the New Jersey State Library. Friends Scrabble will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2013, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. This
program is sponsored by the Friends of the Red Bank Public Library. Registration is not required.
The River Read Poetry Reading Series will hold its regular monthly meeting at the Red Bank Public Library on Saturday, January 12, 2013, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Poet Michael Thomas of Monmouth University will be the featured reader. An open mic will follow. The public is invited to this free program and no registration is required.
The Red Bank Public Library monthly adult book discussion group, Readin’ on the River, will meet on Wednesday, January 16, 2013, from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Members will discuss The Genesis Code by John Case. For more information and to register, contact Patrice Baldino at the library at 732-842-0690.
Free English as a Second Language classes for adults 18 and over are offered regularly at the Red Bank Public Library in partnership with the Literacy Volunteers of Monmouth County. The next ten-week ESL session meets Thursdays from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. beginning January 17, 2013. On Saturday, January 19, 2013, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. librarian Erik Stevenson will show
you how to Outsmart Your Smartphone. Smartphones are everywhere, but using them can be daunting since they are much more than just a phone. This free class will cover Android phones

What Is Social Networking: Exploring Facebook is a new workshop at the Red Bank Public Library. On Saturday, January 26, 2013, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. librarian Julina Lee will review social networking and how to set up and use a Facebook account. The Red Bank Public Library’s Acoustic Saturday music series begins its Winter-Spring season on January 26, 2013, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. with a performance by “The Wag,” an upbeat
band noted for its vocal harmonies, performing music from blues to pop to rock. The library presents this free monthly series, hosted by Anton Daub featuring the best singers, songwriters, and acoustic musicians on the Jersey Shore and beyond. Registration is not required for this program.
The Red Bank Public Library offers the free weekly one-hour Yoga for Adults on Fridays from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Amy Novak, a graduate of the Institute for Therapeutic Massage and experienced yoga instructor, will teach the class, appropriate to all levels of yoga experience.
Please bring your own yoga mat. At this time, registration is not required for this popular class, and participants will be able to attend on a first come, first served basis up to a total of twenty people.
Free one-hour, one-on-one Computer Tutor classes are available at the Red Bank Public Library. Learn computer basics or get help with more advanced topics from our knowledgeable and patient volunteers. Please call or visit the Reference Desk to register for this free program.
The Red Bank Public Library New Jersey History Room is open every Tuesday from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. and by appointment. Researchers, genealogists, local historians, and students are welcome to browse the collection and enjoy historic displays about the area’s people, places, and events. The Friends of the Library meet monthly at the Red Bank Public Library. The Friends Annual Book Sale, postponed by Hurricane Sandy, will now take place on February 1, 2, and 4, 2013. The Board of Trustees of the Red Bank Public Library will meet on Thursday, January 24, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. at the library.
The Red Bank Senior Center in cooperation with the Red Bank Public Library hosts a book discussion group on the last Monday of each month at the Senior Center at 1:00 p.m. except in December. Red Bank Borough residents age 60 and over are welcome to join the Center and participate in this or any of its other great programs.
