MIDDLETOWN, NJ - At 5:04 PM on Wednesday May 16, the Middletown Township Fire Department was dispatched to 214 Raritan Place in the East Keansburg section of the Township for a “structure fire, reported to be a shed” at that location. Approximately 45 firefighters from 4 companies of the Middletown Township Fire Department (East Keansburg, Port Monmouth, Belford Engine and Community Fire Companies), under the command of Chief Andrew Spears, responded to the scene. Upon arrival, the firefighters encountered heavy fire conditions in a large detached 1 ½ story garage. The 20 by 30 foot structure contained an abundance of materials which fed the fire and hamper the firefighter’s attempts extinguish the fire from inside of the structure. Consequentially, for safety reasons Deputy Chief John D’Altilio ordered a defensive attack from the exterior of the structure. Chief Spears declared the fire under control by 5:35 PM.
Also assisting at the scene were the MTFD Air Unit and the Leonardo & Port Monmouth First Aid Squads.
The structure sustained major damage.
Three area residents complained of smoke related issues. They were treated at the scene by EMS personnel.
The cause fire is being investigated by the Middletown Township Fire Prevention Bureau.
