RED BANK, NJ - Starting Monday, June 11, 2012, Red Bank Public Library cardholders ages 14 and over will have a chance to participate in the library’s free adult summer reading club, “Between the Covers.” A kick-off event with milk and cookies will take place from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Reading club members who sign up the week of June 11 to 16 will receive a sweet treat, and members signing up anytime between June 11 and August 25 will be entered into weekly prize raffles. Following a special program on Wednesday, August 29, the library will announce the name of the “Between the Covers” grand prize winners.
The Red Bank Public Library in partnership with Literacy Volunteers of Monmouth County is providing free conversational English classes this summer for adults 18 and over from June 14 through August 23, 2012, on Thursday evenings from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. The classes are free and registration is not required. The classes, led by volunteers trained by Literacy Volunteers of Monmouth County, assist those whose native language is not English to learn the language in an informal, stress-free environment in which they can meet and practice speaking with others who are also learning English. These conversational English classes are suitable for both beginning and intermediate speakers of English and help participants speak English with greater ease at work, home, and in the community. Free English as a Second Language classes for adults 18 and over are offered regularly at the Red Bank Public Library in partnership with the Literacy Volunteers of Monmouth County and will resume at the library in September. On Saturday, June 16, 2012, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Red Bank Public Library reference librarian Erik Stevenson will demonstrate how to browse, check out, and download free audiobooks and free eBooks to a computer, eReader, orMP3 player using the library’s eLibraryNJ service. Erik will explain technical procedures clearly to the beginner and clarify issues for the experienced electronic media user. Registration is required for this free program. The Red Bank Public Library continues the year-long celebration of its 75th Anniversary as the Eisner Memorial Library on Wednesday June 27, 2012, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. when it hosts Jean Klerman from the Jewish Heritage Museum of Monmouth County, Freehold, in a slide show and discussion on “The History of the German-Jews of Monmouth County.” The program is free and no registration is required. The Library is especially proud that in this presentation the Jewish Heritage Museum will be highlighting the career of Sigmund Eisner, Red Bank industrialist and philanthropist, whose family bequeathed the Eisner home on West Front Street to the Borough of Red Bank in 1937 to be used as a public library in honor of Mr. Eisner and his wife, Bertha Weis Eisner. Regular monthly adult programming in June starts with the next meeting of the “Artists’ Workshop” at the Red Bank Public Library on Thursday, June 7, 2012, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Artists seeking inspiration, motivation, and time to devote to their work are invited to attend the “Artists’ Workshop” on the first Thursday of each month. Red Bank artist Joe Bergholm is the Workshop’s Artist-in-Residence and works with the artists as a group and individually, offering suggestions for subjects as well as guidance in principles of art such as color, composition, and the selection and use of materials. The Artists’ Workshops are free and no registration is required. Participants should bring their own drawing and painting materials, although oils are not permitted because of ventilation concerns. The program is supported by a generous contribution from the Friends of the Red Bank Public Library.
Share, swap, clip, and collect coupons at “River Clippers,” a monthly program at the Red Bank Public Library. The next meeting will take place on Wednesday, June 13, 2012, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. one week earlier than the usual date. Join Candyce Till, our own Business Manager, for group discussions on coupon organizing, internet tools, and lessons learned about this popular budget stretching necessity, all as you “double” your fun and your savings by couponing with new friends. Colleen Smith, MA, MSW, LSW, of the Monmouth County Office on Aging, leads two series of “Caregiver Support Groups” at the Red Bank Public Library. These free programs, funded by the National Family Caregivers Grant, are available to anyone who is a caregiver for a person over the age of 60.
Caregivers are invited to come and relax while finding resources and information with a supportive group
of peers. Tuesday sessions through the end of the year take place from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. on June 19, August 21, October 16, and December 18. Wednesday sessions through the end of the year take place from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. on July 25, September 26, and November 28. The Red Bank Public Library offers a free weekly one-hour yoga class for adults on Fridays from 1:00-2:00 p.m. Amy Richardson, a graduate of the Institute for Therapeutic Massage and experienced yoga instructor, will teach the class, appropriate to all levels of yoga experience. Please bring your own yoga mat. At this time, registration is not required for this popular class, and participants will be able to attend on a first come, first served basis up to a total of twenty people.

The Board of Trustees of the Red Bank Public Library meets on the fourth Thursday of each month from September through June at 4:30 p.m. in the Eisner Room of the library. The Red Bank Senior Center in cooperation with the Red Bank Public Library hosts a book discussion group on the last Monday of each month at the Senior Center at 1:00 p.m. Red Bank Borough residents age 60 and over are welcome to join the Center and participate in this or any of its other great programs.
The Avice Noblett Children’s Room of the Red Bank Public Library is announcing its 2012 Summer Reading Program, “Dream Big – Read!” This summer, readers will explore the night, with activities including stories and programs about the stars, dreams and wishes, and even a stuffed animal sleepover at the library in addition to story times and prize drawings. “Dream Big – Read!” is free and open to young people of all ages; registration is required. Children are invited to attend an Ice Cream Social on Saturday, June 2, 2012, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. to kick off the summer. At that time, registration for “Dream Big – Read!” will be open. On Saturday June 9, 2012, at 11:00 a.m. Field Station:Dinosaurs, an outdoor scientific dinosaur attraction in Secaucus, New Jersey, is bringing a roaring, breathing 15 foot Tyrannosaurus Rex to the Red Bank Public Library with dinosaur stories and a chance for children ages three and up to meet the dinosaur. On Tuesday, June 26, 2012, from 4:00 to 4:45 p.m. the Avice Noblett Children’s Room of the Red Bank Public Library in partnership with the Community YMCA will continue the Summer Safety and Reading Series “Dive into a Safe Summer” with a program on summer sports safety offered by YMCA instructors. The series is designed for children six to twelve and their parents or guardians. Two popular monthly programs continue this June in the Children’s Room. Children five years of age and older can attend the library’s “Wii Party” on Monday, June 11, 2012, from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. The “Rockin’ Readers ‘Tween Book Club” takes place on Wednesday, June 27, 2012, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. for children ages nine to twelve. Both programs are free, and registration is required.
While everyone in the Avice Noblett Children’s Room prepares for the Summer Reading Program and other events, all Story Times will be suspended from Monday, June 4, through Friday, June 22, 2012. They will resume Monday, June 25, 2012, with several free drop-in Story Times for children throughout the week, including each Monday at 10:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. All Story Times are open to young children and their caregivers for a session of fun stories, songs, and a simple craft.
Free math tutoring is offered Thursdays in the Children’s Room from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. for students in grades K-8. Registration is required.
“Yoga Kids” will not be offered in June, and “Artsy Smartsy” is on summer vacation and will return in September. Check the library website or the Avice Noblett Children’s Room for more information on these and other free programs for children.
