RED BANK, NJ - In November the Red Bank Public Library will host talks by two New Jersey authors.  Julia Spencer will discuss her book Looking Through a Keyhole, a Memoir (Assistant Publishing, 2011) on Wednesday November 2, 2011, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.  Julia, accompanied by Irene, her Seeing Eye dog, will share her fears, her hopes, her candid responses to her own visual loss, and the ways she has learned to prevail over adversity. Anyone struggling with a life-altering condition will find her story inspiring and motivating. There will be time for questions and answers and a book signing with Julia and Irene.  This program is free and registration is not required.

Matthew R. Linderoth will discuss his book Prohibition on the North Jersey Shore: Gangsters on Vacation (The History Press, 2010), on Thursday, November 17, 2011, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.  North Jersey shore towns such as Long Branch, Ocean Grove, Red Bank, and Atlantic Highlands began as quiet retreats for New Yorkers wishing to escape the vice and crime of the city. With the passage of Prohibition in 1919, however, the region became a haven for criminals who began smuggling liquor into the serene countryside as speakeasies sprang up and gangsters like Vito Genovese, Charles Luciano, and Meyer Lansky took advantage of the criminal opportunity of a lifetime. This fascinating book reveals the true drama that captured the Jersey Shore during Prohibition.  A resident of the North Jersey Shore, Matthew studies twentieth-century United States social history and holds a bachelor's degree in history from Rutgers University and a master's degree in United States history from Monmouth University. There will be time for questions and answers and a book signing.  This program is free and no registration is required.
