ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ - Former Mayor Helen M. Marchetti, a borough native, has been honored by the Shade Tree Commission with the planting of a tree at the municipal yacht harbor.

   The ceremony took place Friday, April 29, Arbor Day at the harbor and was attended by about 60 friends and residents. A reception at the nearby Senior Citizen Center capped the program.

   The tree is a weeping cherry.

   Louise Donoghue, commission chairman, introduced several former and current officials who recognized Marchetti's many years of service to the borough, including Mayor Frederick Rast and former Mayors Robert Schoeffling and Richard Stryker, Police Chief Gerald Vasto, Harbor Commission Chairman Jane Frotton, Michelle Rast and neighbor William Keough, whose children presented Marchetti with yellow roses.

   The former mayor, who has lived in the same borough house all her life, told the crowd that her father had always told her how important it is to contribute to the community.

    Not only is Marchetti the borough's former mayor, she is a member of the Harbor Commission and a former member of the Borough Council, the borough Board of Education and the Recreation Committee.

   The tree planting is part of an ongoing Shade Tree Commission program to honor residents for their service to the borough.
