Middletown, NJ – As part of their commitment to encouraging healthy living and supporting their neighbors, The Community YMCA on Sunday, Feb. 13, is bringing together health and wellness experts for an afternoon of heart health education, and is hosting a blood drive to bolster area supplies impacted by recent winter storms.

The Y’s 5th annual Healthy Hearts Day event will take place from 1:30-3 p.m. at the YMCA Family Health & Fitness Center, 166 Maple Ave., Red Bank, and a blood drive is scheduled for 10 a.m.- 3 p.m.

Free and open to the public, Healthy Hearts Day is designed to increase awareness of how to prevent heart disease, the number one killer in the United States. The event will include cholesterol and blood pressure screenings by Riverview Medical Center; nutrition tips from nutritionist Becky Klahre and wellness consultant Lisa Tevis; nutrition testing by Lawless Chiropractic; chair massage from Champion Chiropractic; sample Zumba and cycling classes from the Y; and healthy snacks. Representatives from the Y, Jersey Shore Running Club, Poricy Park, Kids-Move and McLoone’s Running Store will also be on hand with ideas for regular physical activity, a key factor in combating heart disease.

Additionally, Y members who’ve faced heart disease will share their stories and how they incorporate regular physical activity into their daily routine.

Area residents are encouraged to join the Y in helping to improve the area blood supply by making a blood donation at the American Red Cross Blood Mobile, which will be at the Y before and during the Healthy Hearts event.
