As You Like It: Shakespeare for free at the Monmouth County Library

MANALAPAN _ Enjoy a stellar summer performance of As You Like It by The Next Stage Ensemble of the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters, 125 Symmes Drive.

This free performance begins at 7 p.m., Tuesday, July 13.

William Shakespeare’s As You Like It offers spot on commentary on the nature of humanity’s most basic struggles: with loyalty, love, selfishness, and survival. This production focuses on Shakespeare’s wit and warmth, allowing the audience to delight in the escapades and truisms of some of the most beloved characters and to draw their own conclusions.

Banished by her cruel uncle, Rosalind must disguise herself as a boy and flee to the Forest of Arden. In this fairy-tale setting, surrounded by courtiers and fools, shepherds and outlaws, the plucky Rosalind becomes a catalyst for change, bringing about laughter, love, and reconciliation. This ever-popular Shakespeare comedy, As You Like It, is directed by Abigail Isaac, an alumna of The Shakespeare Theatre’s professional training program.

The Next Stage Ensemble, now in its 18th year, was created in 1992 as part of The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey's Summer Professional Training Program, to foster the work of early-career actors and directors.

One of several exciting outreach programs offered by the Theatre, each summer the Next Stage Ensemble brings the thrill of live performance to audiences throughout New Jersey, while enabling young performers to gain valuable experience in classical theatre and ensemble work.

Much as an Elizabethan traveling company would have done, the troupe tours with only minimal sets and without lighting equipment. In traditional fashion, actors typically perform in multiple roles. The performers rely upon the text and their craft, rather than on elaborate sets, costumes and special effects, to create theatrical "magic."
