April book talks planned in Lincroft and Red Bank
LINCROFT, NJ - Lacey's mom always tells her, "Life is messy." Now, she knows what that means.
Type the words, "life's a..." into a Google search and the first thing that pops up is "beach." This implies living at the beach is an idyllic dream come true.
Having lived at the beach, all their lives, 15-year-old Lacey Freshet and her friends didn't understand the sentiment. They felt their teenage-problem-filled lives were more like the roller coaster they rode regularly in nearby Seaside Heights with its many ups and downs, twists and turns. But everything changed when Hurricane Sandy tossed that roller coaster into the Atlantic Ocean like a child's discarded toy.
Written by Toms River resident Debbie Mura, "Stronger Than the Storm" is their story. This young adult novel follows a group of high school sophomores growing up at the Jersey Shore in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
Mura will discuss the novel and read excerpts during Brookdale’s Visiting Writers Series event 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, in Navesink III of the Student Life Center on the Lincroft campus. She will be joining award-winning slam poet Rachel Wiley, an ardent and intersectional feminist and a fat-positive activist who has toured nationally.

Mura will also be among the featured presenters at the fifth annual Brookdale Writers Read event 7 p.m. Friday, April 12, in the studio space at the Monmouth County Art Alliance Gallery, 33 Monmouth St. in Red Bank.
All proceeds from “Stronger Than the Storm” are being donated to The People’s Pantry food pantry in Toms River and the Helping Hands student food pantry at Brookdale Community College, where Mura is an associate professor in the Communication Media Department. She has been an active New Jersey journalist for more than 40 years.
The book is currently available on Amazon in both paperback and Kindle versions, at the Scroll and Pen Bookstore at Brookdale and at the Silverton Pharmacy in the Silverton section of Toms River.
