Creative Programming & Artistic Collaborations on Tap for Award-Winning Chorus

Artistic Director & Conductor Dr. Ryan James Brandau leads the award-winning Monmouth Civic Chorus in its creative and artistically excellent 2017-2018 season, featuring traditional holiday favorites in December, poetry set to music in March and a celebration of musical genius in April. Subscribers are guaranteed the best seats and best prices for all three concerts, with a savings of over 25% off the single ticket price.

The sounds of the season will deck the halls of the historic Count Basie Theatre (99 Monmouth Street, Red Bank) when the chorus presents Joy to the World on Sunday, December 17, 2017 at 4:00pm.  Audiences will once again be treated to Dr. Brandau’s stunning and moving arrangements of traditional holiday songs, including Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Auld Lang Syne, Deck the Hall, Silent Night and more, in Brandau’s much beloved Christmas Suite.  Interspersed throughout the Suite, which will include arrangements not performed before, will be selections from Handel’s Messiah.  Individual tickets for premium seating are $45 adult, $40 senior, $35 group (10 or more), $10 student; and for regular seating are $30 adult, $27 senior, $25 group, $5 student.  It won't be Christmas without it!

For the remainder of the season, MCC will turn its attention to modern American choral music.  On Sunday, March 11, 2018 at 3:30pm, the chorus presents The Poetry of Song. This innovative program will explore the intersection of music and poetry through the works of several American composers, including Pulitzer Prize winning composer John Corgliano and NJ-based living composer Colin Britt.  Masters of poetry Dylan Thomas, Maria Reiner Rilke, Elizabeth Barrett Browning and others will be brought to life with inspired and heartfelt musical settings.  The concert will take place at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church (101 Chelsea Avenue, Long Branch).  Tickets are $30 adult, $27 senior, $25 group, $5 student.

To close the season, MCC joins forces with the Axelrod Performing Arts Center and Cabaret for Life to celebrate legendary composer and conductor and musical genius Leonard Bernstein with Bernstein at 100!  Alongside a full orchestra, MCC will perform selections from Bernstein’s most beloved works, including Chichester Psalms, West Side Story, and Candide. Performances will take place on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 8:00pm and on Sunday, April 22, 2018 at 3:00pm at the Axelrod Performing Arts Center (100 Grant Avenue, Deal).  Patrons should subscribe to the chorus’ season to reserve the best seats.

Fans of both MCC and New York’s Carnegie Hall will be able to experience a special treat this season.  On Saturday, November 17, 2017, at 7:00pm the chorus will join The Canterbury Choral Society, an orchestra of over 90 players, and a large youth chorus made up from children’s choirs from across the city to perform Gustav Mahler’s famed Symphony Number 8 in E-flat Major.  One of the largest-scale choral works in the classical choral repertoire, this “Symphony of a Thousand” has become Mahler’s most beloved composition.  Tickets for this non-subscription concert can be purchased by visiting The Canterbury Choral Society’s website, www.CanterburyChoral.org.
