HIGHLANDS, NJ - The Highlands Community Singers will stage two public performances this summer, one at the Atlantic Highlands Marina Gazebo and the other at the Highlands Clam Fest.
The concert at the Atlantic Highlands harbor will be staged at 7 p.m., Sunday, July 23 as part of that borough's Sunday night summer concert series. The performance at the annual Highlands Clam Fest will be staged at noon, Saturday, Aug. 5 in Huddy Park.
The 22-year-old, 15-member Highlands Community Singers was founded by the late Art Frelinghaus and is now directed by Louise I. Donoghue of Atlantic Highlands. Accordianist Eric Vagen of West Keansburg provides the accompaniment.
Among the group's primary soloists are Rick Makin of Lincroft, Francesca Pippin of Highlands and Peter Donoghue of Atlantic Highlands, who also acts as master of ceremonies.
The singers perform a variety old-fashioned sing-along numbers, featuring its signature piece, "Happy As a Clam," and "No Sad Sings," both composed by Frelinghaus.
The group primarily performs for seniors citizens at various adult day care and nursing home facilities and its members reside primarily in northern Monmouth County.
