About Zeet Peabody & Robert O’Connor
Zeet Peabody and Robert O’Connor are veteran artists. Both live in Atlantic Highlands and both have long resumes of exhibitions locally and nationally. “You have to have broad shoulders to make art and a high tolerance for frustration” O’Connor says. “When it’s working it’s magical, but then there are moments when it’s just you all alone with a painting that doesn’t work and pictures that no one else is interested in – yet, you keep at it for some unexplainable reason.” So these two artists, who’ve admired each other’s work for some time, decided they wanted to collaborate on a show and began looking for shared images and themes in their work. They noticed one constant – the inclusion of dogs in their pictures. O’Connor says: “Often I’m looking for an idea or image and my dog is there – staring at me for attention or sleeping at my side. They’re an easy muse - they keep my life in perspective. They remind me of what’s important.”
“We decided on the title ‘Neighborhood Dogs’ as both a literal and figurative title” says Peabody. “The literal part is that all images are all of dogs, but the figurative side is about us as artists – we’re a little beat up and worn by the art making process, but we keep going, living in the moment with an innocence that’s probably a bit crazy.” In spite of the challenges, art making remains central to both artists’ lives – Peabody says: “The act of painting is my continual access to the world of my personal mythology.”
Zeet was trained in Chicago by the Imagist Painters, a raucous group of pre punk Neo Surrealists and Alumni of the Chicago Art Institute and holds a BFA in painting and photography from Loyola University. His paintings have been featured in the first TedX Navesink and held in collections in Miami, Chicago, Manhattan and Asbury Park. Many of the dog drawings are based on Zeet’s personal photographs and he can be seen walking his dogs in the neighborhood before disappearing into his studio in Atlantic Highlands. O’Connor got his MFA from the Vermont College of Fine Arts and also studied at The National Academy, The Art Students League of New York and The Cooper Union. He has exhibited at New York Studio Gallery. O’Connor is also a community arts organizer and currently serves as the Creative Director of FilmOneFest.
