The first concert will present, The Kennedys, (Pete and Maura) on April 23
LINCROFT, NJ - A new music series debuts Saturday, April 23, at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Monmouth County in Lincroft. The series, called Earth Room Concerts because of the attractive stained glass in the sanctuary where concerts are held, will bring nationally known folk and singer/songwriter artists to Monmouth County, to fill a local gap. There are a number of excellent concert series in this vein in northern New Jersey, but few on the Jersey Shore.
On April 23 at 7:30 pm, folk-rock duo The Kennedys will appear in the inaugural concert event. Pete and Maura Kennedy, both East Coast natives, met in Austin, Texas, in 1992, and joined forces with Nanci Griffith’s Blue Moon Orchestra for a couple of years. Their first recording, “River of Fallen Stars”, was released in 1995, followed by more than a dozen albums over their 20-year partnership. They have toured all over the US and the UK many times. When performing live, Pete has played acoustic and electric guitars, electric sitar, bass and ukulele, while Maura has played acoustic and electric guitars and ukulele. They list Nanci Griffith, Richard Thompson, the Beatles, the Byrds, Bob Dylan, and Dave Carter as some of their influences.
In 2015 they celebrated their twentieth anniversary both as a band and as a married couple. Rather than indulge in a nostalgic look backward, they’ve taken Dylan’s dictum “don’t look back” to heart, writing and recording forty new songs. In 2015 the pair released a Maura solo CD, a Pete solo CD, and “West,” a Kennedys duo album that seamlessly weaves their influences over the last two decades: Buddy Holly style roots, the tuneful cadences of the Everly Brothers, and the ringing 12-string jangle of the early Byrds, interspersed with darker moments that recall British folk rock a la Fairport Convention.
Earth Room Concerts hopes to hold 4-6 concerts each year. On September 24, we will present The Nields (Nerissa and Katryna), and on November 5, Tracy Grammer (Dave Carter’s musical partner until his death in 2002) will perform. For 2017, Joe Crookston is the first booking, playing on May 6. For more information and tickets, see web site http://earthroomconcerts.org. Kennedys tickets in advance are $15 adult, $7.50 children age 12 and under, and $20 adult and $10 children at the door. The venue address is 1475 West Front Street, Lincroft.
