[editor's note:  Composer Eugene Magalif is the former director of music at the Atlantic Highands and Navesink United Methodist Churches.]

HOWELL, NJ - Eugene Magalif was a rising star pop music composer in Soviet Belarus – his music was constantly played on the radio, and he collaborated with top artists on albums and musicals. When he moved to the US in the early 1990s, his promising career was cut short,

while he worked, like many immigrants, doing everything from carpet cleaning to perfume factory work! As he adjusted to life in the US, he worked for many years as a music teacher in an inner city environment, bringing his love of music to the most underprivileged in our society. While he kept composing occasional pop songs, composition was mainly on the back burner.

But life intervened! Inspiration came in the form of an unlikely muse – a middle-aged balding former army buddy (and a renowned flutist) asked him to compose something for his daughter's graduation from Music College. What followed, in the span of only a few days was "Fairy Tale" – a whimsical nouveau-classical piece for piano and orchestra hailed as "great music with an elegant appearance – a real feast and a real fairy tale!" by the critics.

Shortly afterward, as Eugene sat in his kitchen in suburban New Jersey, he saw what would become the inspiration for a piece that conquered the flute world by storm and blazed a path for all future orchestral works – a lovely little fluttering hummingbird (colibri). Since then, "Colibri" has been performed in over 50 countries around the world, by various instrumental combinations from symphony orchestras to duets, featuring flute, piccolo, and, most recently, even balalaika (!!!) as the solo.

At the same time as "Colibri" took off, Eugene was diagnosed with cancer. With the help of fantastic doctors as well as family and friends, Eugene overcame it and continued composing. A flurry of compositions followed, and now, his orchestral pieces have been performed in over 75 countries and on all continents (except Antarctica!) at various philharmonics, opera houses, concert halls and even at the White House! The scores of the various pieces are published by music publishers in the US and the UK. His music have been described as "delightful, first of all in its professionalism, as well as quite amusing and witty" (Maestro Yuri Temirkanov, Chief Conductor of the St. Petersburg State Philharmonic Orchestra).

Eugene received various recordings of the performances, but they vary widely in instrumental combinations and quality of the recordings. So, we wanted to record a full album of his collected orchestral works collaborating a world class symphony orchestra and conductor, using professional sound engineers and equipment to bring his amazing new compositions to the world! Not everyone gets a second chance to do what they love and use their talents to benefit other human beings. As a music teacher in an inner city public school, Eugene was unable to afford making the recording. Now, with even more compositions under his belt and being able to focus on music full-time, it's the perfect time to make it happen. And he really needs your help!
