Madison, NJ — Opera at Florham will hold its next musicale, “Opera in the Springtime,” on March 23, 2014 at 3 p.m., featuring a variety of famous opera arias and Broadway music.
The event will take place at Fairleigh Dickinson University’s College at Florham, in Lenfell Hall. Located inside Hennessy Hall, Lenfell Hall was the drawing room of the Twombly family when they lived in the 100-room mansion.
Funding has been made possible in part by grants from the Arts Council of the Morris Area through the New Jersey State Council of the Arts/Department of State, a Partner Agency of the National Endowment for the Arts.
The program is a collection of Arts Songs and arias from the classical and Bel Canto era, including of Debussy and Rachmaninoff, "Rejoice greatly" from Handel's Messiah, and favorite arias from Mozart’s Marriage of Figaro and Verdi’s Falstaff.
Lianne Coble, Daniel Lee, and Stephanie Melzi will comprise the cast. David Wroe, Opera at Florham’s Music Director is also Music Director and Conductor for New Jersey Festival Orchestra, Westfield, NJ.
Soprano Lianne Coble has soloed with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Syracuse Symphony Orchestra, Buffalo Philharmonic, Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra, West Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Wheeling Symphony Orchestra, the New York City Chamber Orchestra, and several others. She has performed lead operatic roles with Apollo’s Fire, Syracuse Opera, Opera Colorado, the Ash Lawn Opera Festival, and Berkshire Opera Company. As a collaborative singer, Ms. Coble is on the choral rosters of Musica Sacra, the Clarion Music Society, Seraphic Fire, and the Metropolitan Opera extra chorus. She received awards from the Jensen Foundation Competition, the American Bach Society Vocal Competition, Shreveport Opera’s Singer of the Year Competition, and the Metropolitan Opera’s National Council Auditions.
Baritone Daniel Ihn-Kyu Lee is a recent graduate of the Daniel Ferro Voice Program and the Santa Cecilia Opera Academy directed by Renata Scotto. He performed a number of roles under their guidance, including Belcore in L’Elisir d’Amore, Malatesta in Don Pasquale, Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, the Count in Le Nozze di Figaro, Silvio in I Pagliacci, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor and the title role in Don Giovanni. He has also pursued professional studies at the Juilliard School of Music where he appeared on stage as Marcello in La Boheme. He has also appeared as a soloist with the Opera Orchestra of New York at Carnegie Hall at Lincoln Center. This season, he will appear with the Westfield Symphony as Silvio in I Pagliacci and join the roster of the Metropolitan Opera for their production of Don Carloi. Prior to relocating to the U.S.A., Mr. Lee was a student of voice at the Korean National University where he performed Rodrigo in Don Carlo. Mr. Lee has been honored by a number of organizations, including the Altamura/Caruso International Voice Competition (Winner), Joyce Dutka Foundation International Competition (First Prize), Puccini Foundation International Competition (Winner), the Anna Case Mackay and Nora Fauchald Scholarships awarded by the Juilliard School, and many others.
Mezzo Soprano Stephanie Melzi recently returned from Arezzo, Italy where she studied with famed vocal coach Enza Ferrari, former pianist and vocal coach of Maria Callas. She recently sang in a concert courtesy of the Metropolitan Opera at the Columbus Citizens Foundation in New York City. Her roles include Polina in Tchaikovsky’s Pique Dame, Bizet’s Carmen, Giannetta in Donizetti’s L’elisir D’amore, and Flora in Verdi’s La Traviata. Melzi recently sang the role of Hansel in Hansel and Gretel with Opera at Florham’s outreach program. A graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, she studied vocal performance there under the tutelage of iconic Metropolitan Opera Baritone Edward Zambara. Her other teachers include Metroploitan Mezzo Blanche Thebom and currently William Stone of the Academy of Vocal Arts.
