Belmar, NJ – This Saturday, March 23, the Belmar Arts Council will kick off it’s Ninth Annual Statewide Juried Art Show from 5:00 to 7:00pm at the Boatworks, 608 River Road in Belmar. The wine and cheese reception will feature works of art ranging from oils and watercolors to photography and sculpture in many media, with musical accompaniment by Matt Brown. Exhibit judge Kay Stables, Professor of Design at Goldsmith’s College, University of London, selected 86 pieces for display from the 190 works submitted. The exhibit will be open to the public Wednesdays through Saturdays from 1:00 to 5:00pm, and will continue through May 3rd. All are invited to the opening reception.
Pat Hutchinson, Chair of this year’s exhibit, commented “It’s inspiring to see how many artists came out to submit work to the show, considering the pressures many have faced in recovering from the storm. Add to that the fact that the Boatworks is getting a new parking lot and is in the midst of a major construction site, we’re delighted so many people were willing to overcome the obstacles just to get here, and the work is terrific!” Awards in five medium categories, plus Best in Show, will be presented at the reception. The 2013 winners are Gary Dates, Best in Show for his Archival ink jet print, IPad App; Sheilagh Casey, First Prize in Painting, for her acrylic painting, Memory Vessel; Lauren Bellero, First Prize in Sculpture and Fine Crafts, for No Beginning, No End; Joe Villa, First Prize in Photography, for Back Room; Ellen Scharfenberg First Prize in Drawing and Graphic Media for her pastel Remembrance of Summer; and Robert Varcoe, First Prize in Mixed Media, for Hanging at Hojo’s. Award winners will participate in a group exhibit next February and will receive prizes sponsored by a grant from BAC Trustees Dana Cohoon, Barbara Griffin, Pat Hutchinson, Alexandra Martin, Tracie Orsi, Christina Sanes, Tom Volker, and Joan and Ira Wallace.
In addition, BAC Trustees will present a donation to the Belmar First Aid Squad’s Autism Program generated by their October 2012 Exhibit focusing on “The Art of Autism.”
