Local Cancer Support Organization Partners with National Awareness Initiative for Fifth Consecutive Year
EATONTOWN, NJ – The Wellness Community is pleased to announce its partnership with Breakaway from Cancer, a national initiative founded by Amgen in 2005 to raise awareness of the important resources available to people affected by cancer – from prevention through survivorship. The Wellness Community is the local affiliate of the Cancer Support Community and serves hundreds of residents of Monmouth and Ocean Counties each year.
“Since 2005, Breakaway from Cancer has allowed us to connect cancer patients and their families in our community with valuable resources, including educational presentations by expert speakers and patient advocacy services. Particularly in this economic climate, the ability to offer these resources free of charge helps ease the financial and emotional burden of fighting cancer,” said Ilene Winters, Executive Director of The Wellness Community.
Breakaway from Cancer was created by Amgen as a complementary component to the company's sponsorship of the Amgen Tour of California, a world-class professional cycling competition now in its fifth year. Breakaway from Cancer represents a partnership between Amgen and four nonprofit organizations – Prevent Cancer Foundation, Cancer Support Community (of which The Wellness Community is an affiliate), Patient Advocate Foundation and National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship – dedicated to empowering patients with education resources and hope.
The Amgen Tour of California kicked off on Sunday, May 16th in Sacramento. The Cancer Support Community and several of its California Affiliates will be present at each of the eight stages of the Amgen Tour of California to share valuable information about CSC’s free emotional and social support services available in its vibrant network of community-based centers and online.
You can join The Wellness Community and the Breakaway from Cancer nonprofit partners in their support of families touched by cancer by texting BREAKAWAY to 90999 to donate $10 to support people with cancer and their families. *
