More opportunities to responsibly dispose of items

FREEHOLD, NJ – Monmouth County has scheduled its 2010 Household Hazardous Waste Disposal days so that residents have additional opportunities to get rid of items that are not permitted in the regular or recycling disposal process. The times, dates and locations are:

  • 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 22 – Hazlet, County Garage on Union Ave. (off Rt. 36)
  • 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2 – Upper Freehold, County garage on Rt. 539 (south of the Cream Ridge Golf Club)

Acceptable items for the county’s Household Hazardous Waste Disposal program include pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, solvents, thinners, corrosives, cleaners, pool chemicals, liquid paints, varnishes, aerosol cans (full or partially full), used motor oil, anti-freeze, gasoline, batteries (rechargeable, button or automotive) and propane BBQ tanks. Each item must be in its original container with its original label (with the exception of used oil, gas or antifreeze). Also, the maximum amount of dry material that may be dropped off is 200 pounds and/or 20 gallons of liquid with no container larger than 5 gallons.  Items not accepted are lab re-agents, concrete, electronics, car tires, explosives, radioactive materials and asbestos. Unknown or unidentified items are not allowed either.

“Residents have many opportunities to responsibly dispose of hazardous waste,” said Freeholder John P. Curley, liaison to the county’s Public Works Department. “Residents can visit these locations on designated days or throughout the year they can take their acceptable items to the county’s Household Hazardous Waste facility in Tinton Falls. Either way, there is no charge for homeowners to bring items to a county hazardous waste facility.”

Year-round hazardous waste disposal appointments are available at the county’s Household Hazardous Waste facility at 3211 Shafto Rd. in Tinton Falls. Call 732-922-2234 for information, hours and to make an appointment. School and municipal agencies must make alternate disposal arrangements. Businesses must contract privately for proper disposal of hazardous waste materials.
