HIGHLANDS, NJ - The Navesink Maritime Heritage Association is pleased to announce a free Public Presentation at which Rik van Hemmen will discuss the Navesink River research results conducted in 2016 and how recreational uses of the river can safely enjoy it in 2017.
In 2016 there were various developments that resulted in water quality and invasive species concerns on our river. Due to a lack of available data on these concerns NMHA canceled its 2016 River Rangers program.
A coalition of local environmental organizations, academia and town, county and state agencies started a joint effort at gaining a better perspective on these issues and on taking corrective actions. This program is generally referred to as Rally the Navesink. NMHA has taken an active role in this program.
NMHA president Rik van Hemmen will provide a summary of program achievements and present the consensus view on the state of the river in 2017.
Sufficient progress has been made to allow safe and enjoyable reinstatement of the River Rangers program for 2017.
The River Rangers program is the age 10 to 14 portion of the NMHA mission: Discover, Engage and Sustain. Remarkably, the Rally the Navesink program has provided new knowledge and insights that will strengthen the mission aspects of the River Rangers program, besides providing youngsters a great opportunity to enjoy the river up close and to become lifelong outdoor aficionados.
7:30pm: Coffee and cookies. 8:00pm: presentation. 9:00pm: Close. FREE and open to the Public.
