The current meetinghouse, at the northeast corner of Sycamore and Route 35 in Shrewsbury, has been in active use since 1816. There actually have been at least three Quaker meetinghouses in the area, going back to 1672. Quakers, also called Friends, have been in the area since 1665.
The ongoing restoration of the meetinghouse draws scores of visitors every year, as do the Weekend in Old Monmouth tours, and other similar events. Quakers still worship there every Sunday at 10:30 am, and regularly welcome visitors for worship and other activities. Visitors’ parking is available behind the meetinghouse via a driveway opening from Sycamore Ave.
The Weekend in Old Monmouth is an annual event where 44 Monmouth sites invite visitors to tour without charge. This year the tour is being held Saturday, April 30, from 10 am to 5 pm and Sunday, May 1, from noon to 5 pm. For more information about the tours and/or a pdf, go to https://co.monmouth.nj.us/page.aspx?ID=3464. Hard copies of the booklet are also available at the venues.
