foodtownMIDDLETOWN, NJ - Local Middletown business, Food Circus Super Markets, Inc. owned and operated by the Azzolina and Scaduto families marks its 60th year with a public celebration at the Atlantic Highlands Super Foodtown on Highway 36.   Join the family and local patrons on Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 12 noon for birthday cake, the company’s Circus Own Recipe samples and refreshments.


In 1927 John and Angelina migrated from a small town in Italy to America and opened a small candy and ice cream store at 35 Miller Street in Atlantic Highlands. With the help of their two children Joseph and Grace, the company expanded into a supermarket concept and the Food Circus Super Foodtown family owned chain would begin.

In January 1956, the Food Circus name was born with the grand opening of a new 24,000 square foot grocery store in Middletown, NJ. With the advent of the company name, the circus theme was instituted with the historic iconic “Evil Clown of Middletown” representing the company’s flagship Food Circus Super Market”, states Joseph Azzolina, Jr.

A replica of the clown who appeared in Kevin Smith’s “Clerks 2” movie will be onsite for selfies.

Today, Food Circus operates six super markets throughout Monmouth County. In its fourth generation, the company is led by President Lou Scaduto, Jr. Vice Presidents Phil Scaduto and Joseph Azzolina Jr. President, Lou Scaduto, Jr., stated “I am proud of the vision and accomplishments of my uncle, the late Navy Captain/State Senator Joseph Azzolina and my parents Lou and Grace Scaduto in bringing our local community based supermarket business to Monmouth County. Over the years we have created many jobs and partnerships within our communities, and we are proud to continue that tradition today and into the future with the fourth generation of the family engaged in the business.”

The company intends to offer various sales promotions and in-store activities throughout the year in celebration of its’ 60th birthday.
