LONG BRANCH, NJ - Family & Children's Service (FCS), Monmouth County's oldest nonprofit social service agency serving the vulnerable through education, intervention, care and counseling, is seeking compassionate, enthusiastic and mission-driven volunteers to join our agency in the upcoming fall season through several of our programs including the FCS Thrift Boutique, Reading Buddies and Healthy Buddies.
The FCS Thrift Boutique, an upscale resale boutique, located at 307 Branchport Avenue, offers quality men¹s and women¹s clothing, shoes, accessories and housewares at deeply discounted prices in a clean, well-organized and inviting shopping environment. Since all of the Boutique's merchandise is donated, all sales proceeds go directly to support FCS's programs and services. The Boutique relies on volunteers to perform a variety of tasks including, unpacking and sorting donated items, pricing and displaying merchandise and greeting shoppers as they enter the store. The support of the volunteers remains at the core of the agency's mission; their contributions of time and talent help minimize operating costs and maximize profit. Flexible scheduling is another great reason to volunteer at the Thrift Boutique. Volunteers can work just a few hours a month or several days a week depending on their personal schedules.
Jo McKeon Hutton, a Red Bank native and a retired RN, makes volunteering a priority in her schedule. After discovering the agency's need for volunteers through her local church bulletin, Joe gave the agency a call.
"I feel a sense of accomplishment by being productive in my free time, and making a contribution to people in need," says Jo. Volunteering with the dedicated and friendly sales associates and other volunteers also makes for a pleasant working environment.
With the new school year approaching, FCS's in-classroom programs such a Reading Buddies and Healthy Buddies are also seeking committed volunteers for visits to local elementary schools. Reading Buddies engages senior volunteers in promoting childhood literacy in kindergarten and first grade classrooms in Monmouth County public schools. Retired and senior volunteers read to the same small groups of students each week throughout the school year using a read-aloud format that augments the school's regular teaching curriculum. Healthy Buddies also partners senior volunteers with students grades 3-5, to help them develop the knowledge, skills, attitudes and behaviors needed to maintain and enjoy a healthy lifestyle. Created in response to the startling increase in childhood obesity nationwide, volunteers work with the same group of children each week throughout the school year to help promote a healthy lifestyle in school as well as at home. Volunteers will guide students in making healthy choices by leading nutrition lessons, engaging in physical activities and providing healthy snacks.
