Strategy Is Everything In Grueling Final 500 Meters

Highlands, NJ –  Not all 5K races are created equal. On Sunday, August 9th at 6:30 p.m., more than 100 runners will wind their way down through the town of Highlands, starting—and finishing—at the Twin Lights National Historic Site, one of the highest points on the eastern seaboard. After considering several tweaks to the course, the decision has been made to keep it the same as last year, when the people of Highlands cheered on runners and cooled them down with garden hoses as they ran by.

The entry fee for the race is $30 (race day entry is available from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm at race site). Runners can pre-register at

Registrants will each be issued a timing chip that is activated when they cross the starting line.  All runners will receive a tee shirt commemorating the event, along with a 10% discount in the Museum Shop and a $50 Friends and Family membership to the Twin Lights.

The race will benefit the Twin Lights Historical Society, whose effort is the preservation and education of the Twin Lights Lighthouse. The society’s efforts of encouraging more visits to the lighthouse also increase traffic along the Route 36 corridor as well as revenue for local townships.

“To say your endurance during the final 500 meters will be tested is an understatement,” says Mark Stewart of the Twin Lights Historical Society. “Last year, a lot of the positions changed in the final few minutes. This 5K is utterly unique. Even the best runners were shocked at how demanding this course was.”

Upon completion of the race at the lighthouse, runners will watch the sunset while gazing upon the Atlantic Ocean. Truly, a one-of-a-kind culmination.

The North Tower will be open late to the public during the Twin Lights Twilight 5K Run, as will the generator building, which houses one of the world’s most massive Fresnel lenses.  The air-conditioned Twin Lights Museum will be available as a cool-down area for runners and their friends

and families. Free refreshments and healthy snacks will be available to everyone at the event.
