Autism Safety Fair at the Red Cross, Jersey Coast Chapter facility provides free safety information and resources for the autism community

Ocean Township, NJ — Safety is a concern for all parents, but given the challenges of individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), safety is even more critical. In a 2012 study by the Interactive Autism Network, funded in part by Autism Speaks, 49 percent of the more than 1,200 respondents reported that their loved one with autism had wandered from safety, and more than half of those children had gone missing as a result — a rate nearly four times higher than an unaffected sibling. According to research from the Interactive Autism Network, wandering was ranked among the most stressful ASD behaviors by parents of elopers. Tragically, wandering-related injuries and deaths happen with alarming frequency among people with autism, with over 90% of deaths occurring due to drowning.

A multi-faceted approach to prevention and response is best when combating wandering and teaching safety, including efforts by both families and local first responders to work together on an ongoing basis. In response to this growing concern for parents, Autism Speaks New Jerseyis hosting an Autism Safety Fair to provide individuals with autism and their families an opportunity to meet and interact with local first responders and obtain safety resources and information in a safe, fun and family-friendly environment. The local chapter of Autism Speaks has partnered up with the Jersey Coast Chapter of the Red Crossto put on this event for families.

The event will take place at 1540 West Park Avenue, Ocean, NJ 07712 on Saturday, August 1, 2015, from 11:00am – 1:00pm.
