WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) today applauded Senate passage of the USA FREEDOM Act. With the successful 67 to 32 vote, the legislation now heads to the President’s desk for signature.
“As a cosponsor of the USA FREEDOM Act, I am glad that the Senate finally ended the gridlock and passed this carefully crafted piece of legislation. This bill would end the bulk collection of everyday people’s data and simultaneously continue to give our intelligence experts the tools they need to protect our national security. I urge the President to quickly sign this important bill into law.
“While I’m pleased we finally passed this bill, the national security debacle created by Republican infighting was as preventable as it was dangerous. The deadline to reform our intelligence gathering tools has been looming for months, yet Republicans insisted on last minute brinksmanship to force the Senate into another reckless and unnecessary crisis. This is not the way to get things done and protect the American people.”
