West Long Branch, NJ - The James J. and Margaret M. Kerwin Memorial Award winners were announced for the 2014 - 2015 season are Marina Mabrey, senior guard from Manasquan and Jack Laffey, senior guard from Christian Brothers Academy. The Kerwin Family (Peggy, Marie, Jim, Bill, Tom and John) select the outstanding male and female players in the Shore Area each year in honor of their parents, legendary figures on the NJ sports scene.
Marina Mabrey, a four year varsity player with over 2,000 points, becomes only the second female player from Manasquan to secure the Kerwin Award following her sister Michaela. "She has many out-standing qualities, one of which is her fierce determination which allows her to take over games at crucial times. Whenever you need a basket she delivers" said family spokesperson John Kerwin. "Marina goes very strong to the basket drawing many fouls and if you play off her she'll drain the 3. What's best is that she plays both ends of the court well and is a shut down player on the defensive side." Next year Marina will once again be teamed up with her sister at Notre Dame.
Jack Laffey joins a long list of Kerwin Award winners from CBA, one of which is his coach, Geoff Billet. "Jack is truly the teams' leader on the court. He is a very unselfish player getting everyone involved in the offense" says Kerwin. " He handles the ball and passes very well. He always makes a few spectacular drives each game. If you give him room he easily makes the 3." Jack always seem to draw the toughest defensive assigment each game. "You can tell who is the other teams best player by looking out on the court and see who Jack is guarding" commented Kerwin. Next year Jack will take his talents to Adelphi University.
The Kerwin Awards will be presented at each recepients school at the opening game of the states.
