Long Branch, N.J. - Afro Brazilian Martial Arts and Fitness, located at Pearl Street Gym at 10 Pearl Street, is pleased to offer a fresh new round of classes starting in January.
With nearly 30 years of experience, owner Kasey Sanders will promote, teach and explore the art and culture of Capoeira with your children. Classes for ages 4-11 will be available on Tuesday and Thursday from 6-7 p.m. Classes for adults are also available starting Monday, January 5, with a music and cultural dance class at 6 p.m. and traditional Capoeira at 7 p.m. Additional Capoeira classes are available for teens and adults on Tuesday and Thursday at 7 p.m.
Capoeira is a fun and intense workout known to burn over 1,500 calories in one session. But the benefits of Capoeira go beyond physical development. The blend of martial arts, dance, music and acrobatics will also strengthen self-esteem, concentration, coordination and creativity. In his teachings, Sanders emphasizes the importance of self-expression by encouraging his students to be in control of their bodies and challenge themselves.
The center, which was founded in 2002, also explores other cultural dances such as the Fisherman Dance (Puxada de Rede) Samba and Stick dances (Maculêlê and Dança das Bastões).
The rich history of Capoeira stretches back 500 years during the Colonial slavery era in Brazil when slaves searched for a simple hope of survival amid abusive and inhumane conditions. On November 26, 2014, Capoeira gained the United Nations heritage status.
