shrewsbury, NJ – In the spirit of the holiday season,The Community YMCA is joining #GivingTuesday, a global movement created to inspire community support for charities. Taking place December 2, the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, #GivingTuesday focuses on a day of giving after two traditional days of consumer spending - Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
Rhonda Anderson, President and CEO of The Community YMCA, commented, “We are very excited to join this global initiative of giving back to the community. We hope #GivingTuesday will inspire our members and Y family to improve our community and give back to the Y and other charitable causes.”
#GivingTuesday was started in 2012 by the 92nd Street Y, which was looking for ways to promote and channel the generous spirit of the holiday season, and to inspire action around charitable giving. With the help of the United Nations Foundation and other founding partners, more than 10,000 organizations have joined the movement.
The Community YMCA has been improving lives in Monmouth County for 140 years through programs that are offered to all, regardless of ability to pay.
“As a charity,” Anderson said, “the Y makes a very important promise that no one is turned away who needs us. Donations from programs like #GivingTuesday make it possible for the Y to provide financial assistance for families and individuals to participate in life-changing Y programs.”
Programs at the Y promote healthy living, not only for members who like to stay fit, but also for those who are coming back from cancer treatment or who want to prevent debilitating diseases such as type 2 diabetes. Children benefit from afterschool programs, teen leadership activities and summer camps, where they are in an environment that is safe, nurturing and enriching. Counseling programs offer support for children, adolescents and parents, who may be struggling with addiction or behavioral issues, and are available in many school districts, as well as outreach locations throughout Monmouth and Ocean counties.
