MIDDLETOWN, NJ - The Middletown Township Historical Society will hold its October meeting at 7:30PM on Monday the 20th at the Poricy Park Nature Center, 345 Oak Hill Road, Middletown. Gail Hunton, preservationist of the Monmouth County Park System will talk on the on-going efforts to enhance the Battery Lewis site at Hartshorne Woods Park.
Battery Lewis was during World War II the site of two emplacements of 16 inch artillery guns, the most powerful coastal defense weapon in the country. They protected the area in conjunction with the guns at Fort Hancock on Sandy Hook.
The area has a fascinating military history. Formerly the Highlands Army Air Defense Base (in Middletown) the site was later a Missile Master command and control center for Nike missile bases over the entire New York metropolitan area. The pictures show a gun in place and the site now.
Visitors are welcome and refreshments are served.
