Exhibit on prohibition to take center stage

MANALAPAN, NJ– Monmouth County Archives and History Day will take place on Saturday, Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at the Monmouth County Library Headquarters, 125 Symmes Rd.

As the County’s caretaker of historic documents for the past 26 years, the staff has prepared a month-long exhibit, opening Oct.1, entitled, “The Bootlegger Era: Prohibition in New Jersey.”

“The 1920s and early 1930s was a fascinating period with many trend setting events that had a lasting impact on American life,” Monmouth County Archivist Gary Saretzky said. “This exhibit focuses on just one aspect, the prohibition on the manufacture and sale of liquor except under very limited circumstances.”

Included in the exhibit are documents and photographs from a number of archives in New Jersey, including the Monmouth County Archives, that show how Prohibition was advocated by the Temperance movement and how after it was adopted through a constitutional amendment, it caused a polarization in New Jersey between wets and drys and led to a proliferation of organized crime.

“Some of the moral, ethical, and political issues associated with Prohibition continue today with respect to drugs and other social problems,” said Saretzky.

Archives and History Day will also feature a Monmouth County History Forum on the Prohibition Era, a history game with prizes, and more than 60 exhibitors from across New Jersey showcasing and promoting the history of the area. A complete schedule of the day’s events can be found at www.visitmonmouth.com.

At 1 p.m., the featured speaker, historian Marc Mappen, who co-curated this year’s Prohibition exhibit, will discuss topics related to his recent book, Prohibition Gangsters: The Rise and Fall of a Bad Generation.  At 2 p.m., historian Joan Ruddiman, will talk about National History Day.

At 11:30 a.m. the Jane Clayton Award will be presented to that Cheryl A. Cook of Freehold who is recognized for her work to preserve and enhance historical resources in FreeholdTownship.

“Without question, Cheryl Cook is deserving of this recognition of her achievements,” said French. “I look forward to presenting the award to her on Archives and History Day.”

As the County Clerk, Mrs. French is responsible for the keeping of the County’s records. And it was French’s predecessor County Clerk Jane G. Clayton who established the Monmouth County Archives in 1987 and for whom the annual award is named.

A tour of the Monmouth County Archives will be available by advance registration.  If you are interested in the 2 p.m. tour, contact Shelagh Reilly at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
