spur_horse_ridingLINCROFT, NJ —  Come and join the fun! On Sunday, April 28 from 12noon-3pm, Special People United to Ride (SPUR) is hosting an Open House at the Monmouth County Park System’s Sunnyside Equestrian Center.   Located on Middletown-Lincroft Road in Lincroft, the center is home to SPUR’s therapeutic riding lessons.  Visitors to the Open House are invited to tour the barn and meet the horses. Children’s activities include face painting, crafts and pony rides (fee).  Adults can enter the 50/50 drawing and a chance auction featuring prizes for family-fun activities in the parks.  Adding to the day’s festivities will be live music and refreshments.  Artists will be on hand drawing caricatures. All proceeds support the therapeutic riding program.

SPUR is a non-profit organization that partners with the Monmouth County Park System to provide people with disabilities the opportunity to participate in the therapeutic riding program. Certified instructors work with over 100 volunteers and serve more than 200 students each year. During these lessons, students find limitations are replaced by the freedom of riding and handling a horse.  The experience helps improve self-esteem, social skills, balance, muscle tone, and posture.  Riding can also improve the brain’s ability to process sensory messages.
