Free Two Day Conference

Lincroft, NJ – Brookdale Community College’s Center for World War II Studies and Conflict Resolution with co-sponsors the NJ Alliance for the Preserving the History of World War II in Asia and the NJ Commission of the Holocaust will conduct a two day event to commemorate the loss of nearly 300,000 during one of World War II’s most terrible episodes.

In December of 1937, during the course of its invasion of mainland China, the Japanese military seized the capital of the Chinese Nationalist Government and engaged in an endorsed week-long orgy of killing, rape, pillage and looting. Now known as the “Nanking Massacre,” the incident caught the world’s attention and spurred support of China in its effort to further resist Japanese aggression.

Educators and community are encouraged to attend the free program that will take place Friday, December 7 and continue Saturday, December 8. It will be held in the Warner Student Life Center on the Brookdale Lincroft main campus, 765 Newman Springs Road.

Friday evening, beginning at 6:45 p.m., guest speaker Dr. Paul Winkler, Executive director of the NJ Commission on Holocaust Education will be followed by a screening of “Iris Chang: The Rape of Nanking.” Questions will be answered after the film.

Saturday’s program begins at 8:00 a.m. Featured morning speaker will be eyewitness and survivor, Mr. Chu-Yeh Chang. Workshops, panel discussions, exhibits, displays including photos taken in China and Asia and films on the subject will also be shared. Discussion topics will include comfort women, the screening of “Torn Memories of Nanjing,” the Doolittle Raid, Japan’s biological and chemical factory in China, the upcoming documentary, “Finding KUKAN” and a panel of educators speaking on teaching World War II history.
