“Tear Up Your Debt Day” Event Will Launch Campaign Against Sallie Mae
NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ - Rutgers Student Union, Socialist Alternative, and other student groups are coming together on Wednesday, October 17th to hold “Tear Up Your Debt” Day. This event will seek to raise awareness of the crisis of student debt, which recently hit $1 Trillion nationally. Student organizers will speak out on the issues of student debt and their organizations’ responses to this crisis. Above all, the organizations involved will show that education does not have to be this costly to students, and demonstrate the empirical possibility of free education for all.
Immediately after the speeches, students will stand together and tear apart their loan papers and tuition statements, in a symbolic demonstration similar to the destruction of draft cards during the Vietnam War. Afterwards, students will hold a meeting to launch a campaign to end the University’s relationship with Sallie Mae, the largest private holder of student debt.
This will take place on the Rutgers University campus in New Brunswick, NJ at 1:30PM-3:00PM.
The location will be on the steps of Brower Commons, on the Rutgers University campus:
