MIDDLETOWN,NJ  — From seining the bay to woodworking demonstrations, the Park System has plenty planned to make August delightful! Planning ahead? On Friday, August 10 the fall edition of the Park System Directory, which includes the complete line-up of autumn recreational programs, will be available at most County parks, as well as online at www.monmouthcountyparks.com.

Here’s what we have planned for August:

Seining at the Bayshore

Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays through August 24 from 11am-12noon

Bayshore Waterfront Park, Port Monmouth

Discover marine life while seining the bay. Meet on the beach near the fishing pier. Open to ages 5 and up, under 18 with adult. Weather permitting. Free. Sorry, NO GROUPS.


Eco-Kayak Drop-In Tours on the Navesink River

            Wednesday, August 1 from 9-10:30am

            Monday, August 27 from 5-6:30pm

            Hartshorne Woods Park, Middletown

Join a Park System Naturalist for a leisurely paddle on the beautiful Navesink River. Meet at the Claypit Creek section of the park. Novice paddlers welcome. Single and tandem kayaks are available. All equipment is provided.  Wear appropriate clothing that can get wet. Open to ages 12 and up, under 18 with adult. The cost is $20 per person, cash or check only.  First come, first served. Weather permitting.


19th Century Woodworking Demonstration

            Saturday, August 4 from 1-3pm

            Historic Longstreet Farm, Holmdel

            See how hand tools were used in 19th century woodworking.

Seasonal Plant Care Drop-In

            Saturday, August 4 from 1-1:30pm

            Deep Cut Gardens, Middletown

Our focus will be on houseplants; learn how to divide and repot, start cuttings, and get plants ready to come indoors if they’ve been outside.

Ice Cream, Edible History

            Sunday, August 5 from 3-4pm

            Historic Walnford, Upper Freehold

Learn all about this history of this cool treat by helping to crank a batch of ice cream and then sample the results.

Box Turtle Ambassadors

            Saturday & Sunday, August 5 & 6 at 2pm

            Manasquan Reservoir Environmental Center, Howell

Come learn about this wonderful animal and how you can help them.

Canoe Rentals

            Saturday & Sunday, August 11 & 12 from 9am-3pm

            Thompson Park, Lincroft

Canoes will be available for a relaxing weekend paddle on Marlu Lake. All equipment provided. Fee is $15 per boat for 1-3 people for 2 hours (cash or check only).

Smile Fun Day

Saturday & Sunday, August 11 & 12 at 2pm

Manasquan Reservoir Environmental Center, Howell

Learn how animals smile, what it means when they show their teeth, and make a fun craft.

Penny Rug Demonstration

            Sunday, August 12 from 1-3pm

            Historic Longstreet Farm, Holmdel

            Come see how these decorative coverings were made.

Open Shoot Archery

            Tuesday, August 14 from 5-8pm (ages 8-12, with adult)

            Saturday, August 18 from 12-3pm (ages 8 and up, under 18 with adult)

            Thompson Park, Lincroft (Three Barns Parking Lot)

If you are looking to try your hand at archery, join us for an open shoot at the Thompson Park Activity Barn. All equipment provided. This is a non-instructional program. The cost is $5 per person (cash or check only).

Dragons of the Sky

            Saturday & Sunday, August 18 & 19 at 1pm

            Manasquan Reservoir Environmental Center, Howell

Learn about the amazing world of the dragonfly!

Climb Time

            Sunday, August 19 from 10am-1pm

            Holmdel Park, Holmdel (Pond View Parking Lot)

Enjoy a free chance to try out our 25 foot rock climbing wall. Climbers must be 42 inches or taller.


Krafty Kids Drop In

Wednesday, August 22 from 4-5:30pm at Thompson Park Visitor Center, Lincroft

Thursday, August 23 from 4-5:30pm at Tatum Park Red Hill Activity Center, Middletown

Ages 4 & up, under 18 with adult, are invited to stop in and create a craft to take home. The cost is $5 per person (cash or check only).

Snake Search

            Saturday & Sunday, August 25 & 26 at 2pm

            Manasquan Reservoir Environmental Center, Howell

Search for the Northern Water Snake in their favorite hangout spot. (Must be able to walk one mile.)
