MIDDLETOWN, NJ - On Tuesday, August 7, 2012 at 7PM, the third annual Walk the Walk with Kevin Kret will occur at Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, NJ. This year’s theme is

"We Still Believe....Walk the Walk with Kevin Kret".

We are hoping we will have another successful campaign.

We want to make this year’s event the most successful yet. Kevin’s dad Mike, is planning to bring the actual technology and the doctors behind it to demonstrate how far Kevin has advanced in this new world of technology and science. We again are trying to raise awareness for the importance of the use of helmets, provide HOPE to other families that are in the same situation of having a loved one in a "unconscious state” but to also provide funds to continue this technological and scientific treatment for Kevin.

Thank you for your continued support and God Bless You!

Mike and Joan Kret write....

We are coming up on three years since Kevin Kret’s skateboarding accident that left him in a coma.  How far we have come, but still there is a long way to go.  Through donations from our friends, family and some caring individuals whom we have never met, and working with the International Brain Research Foundation (IBRF), we have been able to get Kevin the most advanced treatments available for severe disorders of consciousness.  We frequently get e-mails describing some treatment or medicine that has helped an individual “wake up” from a coma or vegetative state.  We appreciate every one of those e-mails, and in almost every case these therapies are treatments that we have tried or plan to try to make Kevin conscious once again.  Recently the research protocol for severe disorders of consciousness at IBRF received FDA approval and Kevin has had early access to this treatment which includes medications, supplements, neurofeedback, neuromodulation, infrared therapy and hyperbaric oxygen therapy to name a few.   These therapies are working to balance the chemical and electrical composition of Kevin’s brains and the positive effects are seen in specialized EEGs and by his physical, occupations and speech therapists.  Just several weeks ago we repeated and experiment asking Kevin to imagine he was snowboarding (something he loved to do) and one part of his brain fired up on a special EEG.  Then we asked him to perform and math calculation in his head and another part of his brain was activated.  Clearly he hears us and we hope to turn that into a way for him to communicate one day soon.

Through donations we have been able to purchase equipment that allows Kevin to stand and ride a passive cycle to keep his body in shape while we wait for God with the help of advances in science to bring Kevin back to us once again.  There are a number of promising advances on the horizon.

-        Brain computer interface technology to enable Kevin to communicate

-        Deep Brain Stimulation now approved for Parkinson to help facilitate consciousness

-        Adult Stem Cell research to help the brain generate new neural cells

-        New drugs e.g. Amantadine was recently approved and researchers are trying to understand why Ambien wakes some individuals from coma

-        Devices to enable standing, moving and exercise to improve quality of life.

We continue our Journey of Hope and still believe that one day, one of these treatments will bring our Kevin back to us.  The brain has a remarkable ability to heal.  We watch the medical community re-think its position that vegetative or minimally conscious individuals cannot recover after 1 year, 3 years, 5 years.  WE STILL BELIEVE and with the help of our faith community we hope and pray that Kevin will return.  What message will he have for us?
