TRENTON, NJ – Looking first to the Division of Taxation’s website can speed quests for help with New Jersey income taxes as Tuesday’s midnight filing deadline approaches, State Treasurer Andrew Sidamon-Eristoff said.

“Last-minute filers, take heed,” the Treasurer said. “A wealth of data is available on the Division Taxation’s website that can ease your stress as the deadline nears.”

Returns for 2011 or a request for an extension must be filed by midnight, tomorrow, Tuesday, April 17. Among the services available online to help last-minute filers are:

The Division of Taxation has posted a list of online services at http://www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/2011taxinfo.shtml. Included are required tax forms at http://www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/prntgit.shtml) and answers for filers to frequently asked questions at http://www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/emailfaqs.shtml

Taxpayers can file returns electronically from a secure Web site. Go to www.njwebfile.com to explore electronic filing options.  Payments of estimated tax by e-check or credit card can be made at www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/eservicesother.shtml#git

Taxpayers who are facing financial difficulties and are struggling to meet their tax obligations can find information about available assistance on the Division of Taxation’s Web site at: www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/helpwithdebt.shtml

Extension requests can be submitted online through the Division of Taxation’s website (www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/eservicesother.shtml#git) or by mail using the traditional paper form, Form NJ-630, Application for Extension of Time to File New Jersey Gross Income Tax Return, which can be printed from the Division of Taxation’s Web site (www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/prntgit.shtml). Extensions do not eliminate interest and penalties for filing late. To avoid penalties and interest, individual income tax returns and payments for 2011 must be postmarked or submitted electronically by midnight on Tuesday for most filers. This is the same as this year’s deadline for filing Federal income tax returns.

Checking on Refunds: Taxpayers who have filed their returns can use the Division of Taxation’s refund checking service at www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation/refinfo.shtml. The site allows taxpayers to monitor the status of their refunds online.

The Customer Service Center will be taking calls from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and the Trenton office at 50 Barrack Street will be open for walk-in customers.
