RED BANK, NJ - The Monmouth Civic Chorus awarded a total of $2500 to the winners of its 2012 scholarships for vocally talented New Jersey high school seniors. The First Place winner was Evangeline Athanasiou, mezzo-soprano, Red Bank, who was awarded $1300. The Second Place winner was Christa Dalmazio, soprano, Leonardo, who was awarded $1200. Michelle Bonzani, soprano, Point Pleasant, and Vincent Martini, baritone, Union Beach, were awarded Honorable Mention.
Evangeline Athanasiou is a vocal major in the Visual and Performing Arts Academy at Red Bank Regional High School. She is voice student of Cynthia Springsteen and has sung with the Concordia Youth Chorale at Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall and St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York City. In 2011 Evangeline won the New Jersey All-State Opera Competition, where she was also awarded the C. Scripps BeBee Scholarship and the New Jersey Governor’s Award. She also won the Upper Level New Jersey National Association of Teachers of Singing Classical Singer Competition for High School Singers, where she was chosen to participate in a master class with renowned soprano Julianne Baird. In January 2012, Evangeline competed in the high school division of Classical Singer Magazine’s annual classical voice competition and advanced to the second round, which will be held in Chicago in May. She plans to pursue an undergraduate degree in vocal performance at either Boston Conservatory or Eastman School of Music.
Christa Dalmazio, a senior at the Ranney School, is also a student of Cynthia Springsteen and a member of the Concordia Youth Chorale. Christa has performed solo roles at Carnegie Hall, Avery Fisher Hall, St. Michael’s Church, and the Liederkranz Foundation in New York City, and at Notre Dame de Montreal and Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupre, Quebec, in Canada. She is a Merit Award Winner in Classical Voice from the National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts YoungArts Voice Competition, a Regional Winner in the Classical Singer Magazine High School Competition, and a Finalist in the All-State Opera Competition. She plays harp, piano and viola, and also enjoys composing, conducting and Irish dancing. She has applied to eight national conservatories and has so far been accepted at San Francisco Conservatory, Cleveland Institute of Music, and Mason Gross School of the Arts.
Michelle Bonzani attends Point Pleasant Borough High School, where she sings in the Show Choir and starred as Mrs. McAfee in Bye Bye Birdie and Johanna in Sweeney Todd. She is a student of Terry Bojanowski. Michelle has also performed on the Point Pleasant Beach boardwalk and with the All-Shore Chorus, Regional Jazz Choir, Rock and Roll Chorus and Algonquin Arts Theater. She has been accepted at both Pennsylvania State University and the University of Delaware.
Vincent Martini is a student of Kris Zook and a vocal major in the Visual and Performing Arts Academy at Red Bank Regional High School. He has performed with the Concordia Chorale, New Jersey All-State Opera Festival, All-Shore Chorus and All-State Chorus. He participated in the Marching Band Leadership Academy at West Chester University in Pennsylvania, and plans to attend the Manhattan School of Music.
