EATONTOWN, NJ - Macerich, the Freehold Raceway Mall management company, has signed a pledge to ban the sale of live animals. The animal welfare community is very pleased about this milestone in an effort to end inhumane puppy mills. The lease for the puppy store previously located in the Freehold Raceway Mall was not renewed thanks to this ban, and the store has since closed.

The Monmouth County SPCA began rescuing at-risk puppies from overcrowded shelters in the South and Puerto Rico as part of our participation in the ASPCA $100K Challenge. The program was so successful that we plan to continue to rescue these puppies and have them available for adoption at both the Eatontown Adoption Center and our new location in the Freehold Raceway Mall. Kittens will also be available for adoption at both locations.

Our organization will work with the overcrowded shelters to help educate their communities about the importance of spaying and neutering pets. A portion of the adoption fees for pets at the Freehold location will be used to fund grants for community spay/neuter education programs.

"The Freehold Mall Adoption Center serves two critical objectives for the organization.  First, it provides a location in Western Monmouth County to better serve the needs of all the residents of the community.  Second, it offers the Monmouth County SPCA the opportunity to continue to spread our message of adoption and responsible pet ownership" - Jerry Rosenthal, MCSPCA Interim Executive Director.
