FREEHOLD, NJ – The Monmouth County Board of Addiction Services elected new officers at its annual organization meeting last week.

Dr. John J. Verdon, Jr. of Rumson was elected chairman for 2012; Dr. Robert L. Gabel of Little Silver was elected first vice chairman, and Peter Dougherty of Ocean Township was elected second vice chairman.

“The Board of Addiction Services seeks to combat a situation that is far too prevalent in our communities,” said Freeholder Director John P. Curley, who participated in the annual organization meeting. “Fortunately, the members of this board have expertise in health care, social services, business, public policy and law enforcement to tackle the issues related to addiction and provide resources for our residents in need.”

Other members of the Board of Addiction Services are: R. Diane Aifer of Freehold (representing the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office); Mary Anne Ashby of  Tinton Falls; Richard Bernhardt of Allenhurst; the Rev. Henry P. Davis of Middletown; Gerald Falzone of Millstone; Therese T. Hendrickson of  Freehold; James J. McGuire Jr. of Tinton Falls; Fran Micelli of Brielle; Vicky J. Nelson of Red Bank; Ronald Povolo of Keansburg; Norman Salt of Belford; Andrea Stokes-Jones of Asbury Park, and Laura Von Glahn of Freehold.

The 16 members are appointed by the Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders. Members serve three-year terms and new members are appointed annually.

The Board awards and monitors $2.3 million that support treatment services as well as prevention and education programs.

Treatment services include residential rehabilitation, detoxification, outpatient services and halfway houses. Ongoing programs include municipal alliances to prevent alcoholism and drug abuse, the “Strengthening Families” program and intervention services.

The Board also oversees the county’s Intoxicated Driver Resource Center (IDRC) and has subcommittees to advise it on changing policies, procedures and priorities.

Generally, the Board meets the first Wednesday, every other month at 5:30 p.m. in the Monmouth County Human Services building at 3000 Kozloski Rd. The 2012 meeting dates are March 7; May 2; July 11; September 12, and November 7. The meetings are open to the public.
