MIDDLETOWN, NJ – The 2nd Annual Cardboard Box City was held Sept. 30th in Tinton Falls. Participants prepared their temporary shelter for the overnight event. The event is sponsored by Family Promise of Monmouth County.  Family Promise is the only shelter for intact homeless families in Monmouth County and has a success rate of 80 percent. “This year, families are in crisis and we have a waiting list,” says Executive Director Shanna Goldstein. 

Nancy Scharff, who has played at the Rome Opera and Music Festival, Italy, and in New York City at Carnegie Recital Hall, Lincoln Center and St. John The Divine performed for the Box City residents. Also, bands featuring local youth talent performed, including last year’s singer/songwriter Whitney Kelly. 


The 2nd Annual Cardboard Box City in Tinton Falls, held Sept 30th. The best decorated box was created by Emily Ahrens from Old First United Methodist youth group in Long Branch.

To connect with the experience of homelessness, CBC ‘residents’ slept outside in a Cardboard Box, and dined from a soup line on Friday.
