ASBURY PARK, NJ - Help-Portrait is a community of photographers coming together across the world to use their photography skills to give back to their local community. It was founded by celebrity photographer Jeremy Cowart, who organized the test project in 2009 and the first official event in 2010.
This year, on December 10th, 2011, photographers around the world will be grabbing their cameras, finding people in need and taking their picture. When the prints are ready, the prints get delivered. In our area, the project will happen in Asbury Park, and is known as Help-Portrait Asbury Park.
Daniel P. Falvo, Director of Help-Portrait Asbury Park for the second year in a row, has lived in New Jersey since age two, went to Shore Regional and currently lives in Neptune City. He became a serious photographer around 2006 and has his own photography business: Daniel P. Studios, LLC, in Neptune City, NJ.
Falvo became involved with HPAP two years ago when he saw a blog article for the first ever event. “The simplicity of the concept really grabbed me. There’s not a lot of hype, it’s not a convoluted charity. Find people, take their picture, print it, give it to them. None of the photographers can use any of the images for their personal gain, it’s strictly to give back,” says Falvo.
This year, Falvo met with Ed Rice from the Asbury Housing Authority’s Community Development Corp, and realized that, “we could be looking at between 800 – 1200 families learning about the project with a real potential to realize 750 - 900 actually showing up!”
So, volunteers and lots of them, both technical and general, are needed to make this year’s event a success. Photographers, photography posers, photo editors, production assistants and hair and make-up experts are needed on the tech side; and people to keep the lines flowing, construct backdrops and just generally assist on the day of the event. The project also needs more lights, drape (or fabric) for the backdrops, printers, paper and lumber.
