MIDDLETOWN, NJ – The 2st Annual Cardboard Box City is this week, and participants are preparing their temporary shelter for the overnight event. Family Promise of Monmouth County is the only shelter for intact homeless families in Monmouth County and has a success rate of 80 percent. For more information, visit http://www.familypromisemc.org.
“This year, families are in crisis and we have a waiting list,” says Executive Director Shanna Goldstein. “We also expect more participants at Box City.”
Nancy Scharff, who has played at the Rome Opera and Music Festival, Italy, and in New York City at Carnegie Recital Hall, Lincoln Center and St. John The Divine will perform. Also, bands featuring local youth talent will perform, including last year’s singer/songwriter Whitney Kelly.
To connect with the experience of homelessness, CBC ‘residents’ will sleep outside in a Cardboard Box, and dine from a soup line on Friday September 30th in Tinton Falls. A graduate of the program will tell her story, after participants decorate and set up their boxes.
See video from last year’s event at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-44yreiBQCs. Participants raise $100 or more to secure a spot for their box. Prizes are awarded for best decorated boxes and for the most money raised.
