As part of its “Historically Speaking” lecture series, Monmouth County Historical Association is pleased to welcome Dr. Marc Mappen to speak on the subject of “New Jerseyans and the Civil War,” Sunday, September 25 at 2:00 p.m.  The lecture will be held in the first floor exhibition gallery at the Association’s Headquarters, 70 Court Street, Freehold, where the new exhibition, “Marching Away:  Monmouth County in the Civil War” is on view.

Dr. Marc Mappen will be the guest speaker at the Monmouth County Historical Association meeting September 25th.

Author and Historian Mark Mappen will present moving true stories about New Jerseyans in the Civil War ear, including Abraham Lincoln’s visit to Trenton in 1861, the New Jersey slave woman who won her freedom, the trip of General Ulysses Grant to New Jersey on the night of Lincoln’s assassination, a New Jersey soldier in a Confederate prison and much more.

Dr. Mappen was formerly a Dean at Rutgers and recently retired form his position as Executive Director of the New Jersey Historical Commission.  He is the co-editor of the award-winning “Encyclopedia of New Jersey” and the author of “Jerseyana:  The Underside of New Jersey History,” as well as “There’s More to New Jersey than the Sopranos,” now in its third printing.  He has been described by the New York Times as “the eminent New Jersey historian” and by the Star Ledger as “an engaging speaker.”

The lecture is open to the public and admission is free.  Refreshments will be served following Dr. Mappen’s presentation.
