HIGHLANDS, NJ - Legislation (S-2073/A-2938) to name the bridge on Route 36 over the Shrewsbury River in memory of the late Assemblyman Joseph Azzolina was signed by Governor Christie today. The measure was sponsored by Monmouth County legislators Jennifer Beck (R-12), Sean Kean (R-11), and Joe Kyrillos (R-13) in the Senate; and Mary Pat Angelini (R-11), Declan O’Scanlon (R-12), and David Rible (R-11) in the Assembly.

Azzolina, a veteran of the United States Navy, served in both the General Assembly and the Senate and was a successful and respected businessman in the local community.

“As a Navy veteran, elected official and local businessman, Captain Azzolina gave so much to his community.  It is fitting that this bridge in his home county will serve as a lasting tribute to Captain Azzolina,” said Senator Sean T. Kean.

Assemblywoman Mary Pat Angelini added, “One of Joe Azzolina’s many loves was for the water. It is quite fitting that the bridge crossing the Shrewsbury Riverbe named in his honor. Joe’s dedication to helping people, regardless of whether they were a constituent or customer, is what made him special.  His kindness touched many, especially the people in Monmouth County. I’m glad we can say ‘thank you’ for all he did. “

Assemblyman David Rible concluded, “Joe Azzolina had an impact on everyone he came into contact with,” said Rible. “No matter which hat he wore, he made everyone feel welcome and appreciated. We can never repay the debt of gratitude Joe is owed, but naming the Rt. 36 bridge for him ensures he will never be forgotten.”
