Holmdel, N.J. - Braving the brutal hot temperature, on Saturday, July 23, 2011, 12 teams comprised of more than 400 softball players and fans gallantly competed in the 5th Daniel R. Shalloo Sr. Memorial Softball Tournament sponsored by the Frances Foundation for Kids Fighting Cancer, Inc. (www.francesfoundation.net). This exciting and competitive tournament was played at Cross Farm Park in Holmdel, N.J.; and all 12 teams played in the name and honor of a local child battling cancer. Kids with cancer came out and vigorously rooted for their teams; and these courageous kids, with indomitable spirits, brought smiles and laughter to everyone at the picnic and tournament. Team Mya, playing in honor of 10 year old Mya Terry from Oakhurst, defeated Team Logan in the championship game. Logan Parker, a spit-fire 5 year old fighting cancer, inspired his team from the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office/PBA Detectives. Mya cheered her team to the championship from her hospital room at St. Jude’s in Memphis, Tennessee.

The picnic included cheeseburgers, hot dogs, pizza, salads, watermelon, cake, ice pops, as well as prizes for the kids participating in games like the soccer shoot-out, water balloon toss and a limbo. DJ Music entertained as the kids got their faces painted, decorated cupcakes, and ate cotton candy. Even Santa made a surprise appearance bringing some “extra cool” smiles.

The softball tournament and picnic raised more than $10,000.00 all of which has been immediately disbursed to kids hurting with cancer and their families – kids residing in Hazlet, Ocean Twp., Toms River, Brielle, Manalapan, Howell, Old Bridge, Lebanon, Wanamassa, Oakhurst, and Holmdel. The picnic and softball tournament were truly memorable and special for kids of all ages.
