Families Hang Ten at the Beach Ball, The Jersey Shore's Largest Earth-Friendly Family Event
Sea Bright, NJ----Hundreds of families gathered at the Ship Ahoy Beach Club in Sea Bright for an afternoon of fun, sun, live reggae music, green crafts, delicious catered food, tiki bar, and a performance by the cast of John Tartaglia's ImaginOcean. As one of the largest earth-friendly family event on the Jersey Shore, the event proved that it is possible to have a great time, and leave the planet in good condition.
The Family Beach Ball attracted supporters of Clean Ocean Action, including ocean enthusiasts, corporate partners, and elected officials. Party-goers enjoyed live music by Random Test; a full spectrum of food offerings by Branches Green Cuisine, fresh caught scallops by Fisherman's Dock Co-op, shrimp from Lusty Lobster, snacks from Wegmans; and drinks by Holly Crest Wine Cellars, River Horse Brewing Co., and Island Margaritas. Dessert was provided by The Flaky Tart and Gracie & The Dudes.
"We appreciate COA providing this forum for us to demonstrate our "Green Cuisine" program, where we demonstrate how, with a lot of commitment and only a little effort, catered events can be produced with a minimal impact on pollution and waste of all kinds by composting food, donating product to worthy organizations such as Lunch Break and the Food Bank, use of LED lighting throughout our facility, eliminating non-compostable and/or recyclable products, and designing menus that allow conservation-minded yet enjoyable options," said John Lombardo of Branches Catering.
The seaside event provided hours of free fun for the kids, including simulated surfing, face painting, "green" crafts, and a special performance by the cast of the hit off-Broadway show, John Tartaglia's ImaginOcean!
"The Beach Ball is waves of fun and kicks-off the summer. It is a special time for families to reflect on the work that Clean Ocean Action is doing to ensure our ocean is safe for swimming, surfing, and fishing throughout the year," said Louise Hall, Beach Ball Committee Co-Chair.
The Family Beach Ball event embraces the "reduce, reuse, recycle" mantra and is almost completely waste free. "WasteNot Solutions looked at each waste item generated from the event and looked at how we could reduce, reuse or recycle it. We looked to see how close to a "zero waste" event we could come. Washable dishes are used, and bottles/cans recycled. All disposable items are purchased specifically to be compostable and support organics recycling. Most auction items are placed in reusable shopping bags eliminating the plastic cellophane wrap used previously," said Susan Murray from WasteNot Solutions.
"Clean Ocean Action is devoted to making a difference in the health of the ocean, and the environment as a whole. Today's event was a phenomenal opportunity for people to help make a difference in a fun, family-centered way. We hope that people are mindful of the environment and remember that we are all the solution to ocean pollution," concluded Emily Hackett, Events Coordinator for Clean Ocean Action.
