MIDDLETOWN, NJ  – Brookdale Community College’s will host the Tibetan Monks of the 2011 Drepung Gomang Institute Sacred Arts Tour on March 30 at the Lincroft main campus, 765 Newman Springs Road.

The public is invited to attend several events, sponsored by Brookdale Student Life & Activities and the International Education Center.

Meet the Monks in the Warner Student Life Center lobby 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. The monks will be selling traditional handicrafts.

Cultural Arts Presentations:

The monks will perform traditional dances, lecture on Buddhist teachings and engage in a sample debate, which is a daily part their education at the monastery.

First Presentation:        3 p.m. – 5 p.m. - in Navesink III

Second Presentation:    7 p.m. – 9 p.m. - in Navesink II & III

At each event, a variety of items, most of which are hand-made will be available for purchase. Included will be jewelry, clothing, artwork, memorabilia and traditional Tibetan instruments including solid brass singing bowls. Proceeds from the sale of the items support the work of the Drepung Gomang Monastery in Southern India.

For the past 11 years, specially trained Tibetan monks have come to North America and gone on multi-city performance tours, raising awareness of Tibetan culture as well as necessary funds for their 2000 monks in exile at the Drepung Gomang Monastic Institute in India.

Although the March 30 events are supported and sponsored by Brookdale Community College, contributions will be welcomed at each event with 100% of all contributions used for tour expenses, food, living quarters and medical facilities for 2000 monks living at the Drepung Gomang Monastery in Southern India. Contributions are also used as seed-funds for income-generating projects aimed at eventual self-sufficiency.
