SHREWSBURY, NJ -The forecast for Sunday, July 28th was clouds, thunder and rain, but the light of hope shone in the town of Shrewsbury. The World Mission Society Church of God hosted the “Unity in the Community” blood drive extravaganza at the Central Jersey Blood Center with the goal to save lives and raise awareness of the dire need for blood supply during these hot summer months.
However, this was more than just a blood drive. More than 300 Church of God volunteers from across the tri-state area spent their Sunday in Central Jersey lending a hand in the community… and a vein to save at least three lives. As the blood donations took place inside the Center’s facilities and two outside buses, many of the Church of God members hosted fun games for children and their families, live performances, ranging from an Opera piece to a Cotton Eyed-Joe choreography to a rock band. Even Mayor Donald Burden of Shrewsbury stopped by the drive to show his support and gratitude to the Church of God and its volunteers for their commitment to save lives in Central Jersey.
As part of the 164th “Worldwide Blood Drive to Give Life through the Love of the Passover”, the Church of God emphasized the importance of donating blood, and the message it hopes to deliver through every pint donated. “In the Church of God, we believe in following the example of Heavenly Mother and spreading the love of God through good deeds,” said one of the Church of God donors. “Because Christ came to give us eternal life through the spiritual blood of the Passover, we want to help save lives by donating our blood. And through this, we hope that many will come to understand the importance of the Passover.”
The Church of God holds blood drives on a global scale all throughout the year. It also conducts countless other service events; from environmental cleanups and food drives, to clothe drives and various other selfless causes across 2,200 locations in more than 150 countries. Because of these efforts, the Church of God has received numerous recognitions for its contribution to the welfare of society, including the Presidential “Call to Service” Award for Community Service and a special commendation from the United Nations for its disaster relief efforts. The World Mission Society Church of God is a faith-based, non-profit organization that strives to spread the fragrance of Christ through beautiful deeds of love, and will continue to do so through their service in the community in 2013.
