ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ - Yesterday, during the 6th grade science class, the students at Mother Teresa Regional School constructed edible cells. They are currently studying the chemical makeup of cells, including plant, animal, and bacterial. The edible cell activity is designed to reinforce cell structures and functions and the best part is that at the end of the activity the cell is completely edible! Each food item used represented a specific organelle of the cell. This activity was developed to help students visualize cells as three dimensional structures, since sometimes it may be difficult to grasp that concept. Most of the students’ exposure to cell structure is through diagrams in textbooks and it is hard for them to portray the cells as multidimensional.
