a new web-based program offers support and a safe haven LONG BRANCH, NJ – At 11am on Thursday, September 22, 2005, Sen. Ellen Karcher will join a few local students to blow off some steam. FACES (For All Children Experiencing Stress), a program of Family & Children’s Service (FCS) will hold its inauguration at FCS, 191 Bath Avenue, Long Branch. With a click of a mouse, local kids will access the FACES website (www.njfaces.org), where they can find help for stress and anxiety and talk to kids their own age in a monitored, secure chat room and on the FACES bulletin board. FACES can help them understand that stress comes in many forms. It offers children and teens the opportunity to talk to others about issues such as divorce, family financial problems, a death, an illness, school, peers and siblings in a safe non-threatening manner. FACES also connects parents and professionals to services and resources throughout the state. Sen. Karcher was instrumental in obtaining funding for FACES, saying that "children need a comfortable environment in which they are encouraged to grow emotionally, and to deal with their feelings in a constructive and healthy way. A resource center like FACES is a vital component to our community, to help children cope with some of the issues that cause behavioral disorders, childhood depression, and which may lead to other negative and damaging behavioral models down the road." She worked with Patti Diamond, FCS Community Programs Director, who designed the program. Diamond believed that “stress among children and teens is at an all time high and they don’t know what to do with the myriad of feelings within.” FCS is the oldest and largest social services agency in Monmouth and Ocean counties. With 24 programs designed to address needs at every stage of life, it serves more than 12,000 people each year through education, intervention, care and counseling. For more information on FACES, please call Linda Steel, Director of Development at 732-222-9111. Thank you for publicizing this information.
