THIRD ANNUAL WALT WHITMAN POETRY FESTIVAL TO BE HELD IN OCEAN GROVE

OCEAN GROVE, NJ - Kevin Chambers, President of the Historical Society of Ocean Grove, announces the third annual Walt Whitman Poetry Festival will take place in historic Auditorium Square Park adjacent to the Great Auditorium on September 24th. This year the Festival will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass.”

There will be something for all poets and poetry lovers to enjoy. Chambers and co-founder, Gloria Rovder Healy, are bringing over forty of New Jersey’s finest poets to share their words at this Third Annual Walt Whitman Poetry Festival.

In addition to Ocean Grove’s John Bonk, a member of the Ocean Grove Historical Society, who’ll be reading Whitman’s poems at Centennial Cottage, poets from around the state will be reading spiritual poetry, war, peace and political poems along with poems about the Grove, Whitman and Monmouth County.

Shrewsbury poet, Gloria Rovder Healy, author of, "Out of My Mind “ and editor of two best selling poetry books about Monmouth County, will emcee the one day program.

The festival begins with Cheryl Moore, Asbury Park, Laine Sutton Johnson, Red Bank, Carol Mc Callister, Ocean Grove, Peggy Vassallo, Morristown, Penelope Tsotakos, Wall, and Nancy Drake, Fair Haven, reading Heritage poems written by Whitman contemporaries. These poets will also read their own poems.

Michelle Cameron will take you to the Globe theatre in England. Her novel in verse ,”In The Shadow of the Globe” will intrigue you as she shares many of the intimate secrets of Shakespeare's life -- his ambitions, rivalries, and loves .Michelle Cameron’s lecture combines fact, conjecture, and poetry in a fascinating mix!

Joe Weil, a Pushcart Prize nominee from Cranford and a Dodge poet, will read and co- host the War, Peace and Political Poetry program along with poets James Gwyn, and Brielle’s Gladys Goldberg. Red Bank’s Charles Johnson, a Dodge Foundation poet, will lead a workshop. Other poetry workshops will be led by Brookdale’s Laura McCullough and Paula Newcomer, Interlaken. All workshop leaders have has poetry published in many prestigious anthologies, including Journal of New Jersey Poets. new renaissance, the Paterson Literary Review and Lips..

Other featured poets are Frank Finale, one of New Jersey’s best selling authors; Bob McKenty, light verse poet from Matawan, whose poems have appeared in the Formalist, Wall Street Journal and Reader’s Digest and Pushcart Prize nominee, Emanuel di Pasquale, author of the children’s poetry book, “Cartwheel to the Moon”.

Sander Zulauf, Poet Laureate of the Episcopal Diocese of Newark, will do a spiritual poetry reading along with pastoral counselor, Jerome Leary Red Bank; Maude Carolan, editor of the spiritual newsletter, “Searching For The One My Heart Loves” and Deborah La Veglia, editor of the Black Swan poetry magazine and co-chair of the Wednesday night poetry reading series at Barron’s Art Center, Woodbridge.

There will be a panel discussion with poets, Haddon Heights; Chris Bogart, Eatontown; Madeline Tiger, Bloomfield; Alice Johanson, West Orange; Sander Zulauf, Andover and Karen Haefelein, Sussex, Joe Weil, Cranford. They will discuss writing, reading and publishing poetry, teaching poetry in schools and the advantages of forming or joining a writing group. They will also respond to questions from the audience.

Poets will take a poetic tour of Monmouth County when Gilda Kreuter, Brick, Elizabeth Marchitti, Totowa, Cheryl Moore, Asbury Park; Gladys Goldberg, Brielle, Madeline Tiger, Bloomfield, Vincent Larkin read from Poetic Reflections of Monmouth County. It’s a journey you won’t want to miss.

The Historical Society of Ocean Grove will introduce the new anthology, Voices Rising From The Grove at the festival All poets working at the festival will have poems in the book including Grove poet, Carol McAllister, Jim Whelden, past president of the Delaware Valley Poets, and John Baldwin and Alissa Pecora, members of Red Bank’s Writer’s Ink Poetry Group. The book is dedicated to Walt Whitman and all poets inspired by his work. Reading excerpts from the book are poets Gay Norton Edelman, Red Bank, Susan Martin, Asbury Park, Sheila Massoni, Hackensack, Jim Whelden, Whiting and Norma Pratt, Red Bank

One of the most popular events is the War, Peace and Political Poetry reading by Joe Weil, James Gwyn and Gladys Goldberg and Chris Bogart..

In addition to the poetry programs, Kevin Chambers plans a Whitman exhibit in the Museum

and will conduct a walking tour of the Grove highlighting sites where Whitman lived and wrote his poems.

Mr. Chambers has also scheduled an open treading where all poets can read poems of their choice. This is an opportunity for poets of all ages and levels to share their words.

The day will close with a poetry reading with poets, Chet Shadowitz, Brick, Bob Evans, Elmer, NJ, Gayle Aarensen and Maude Carolan, Ocean Grove, and Gloria Healy, Shrewsbury.
